Newspaper Society to keep awards scheme on hold

The Newspaper Society has confirmed that it will not be running its three annual awards again this year.

The Circulation, Editorial and Promotions Awards, which aim to reward the best journalists and newspapers across the UK as well as circulation and advertising initiatives, are normally held in the spring.

These are followed by the prestigious Weekly Newspaper Awards and the Advertising and Digital Media Awards, both of which usually take place in the autumn.

Twelve months ago the NS cancelled the trio of prize-giving schemes due to market conditions and because it wanted to review the format of the awards.

A spokesman for the NS told HTFP that they would definitely not be going ahead during 2010 but would not rule out their return in the future.

On Friday it was announced that the Regional Press Awards 2010 would also be cancelled this year.

Meanwhile another media awards scheme celebrating the best creative industries across the East of England has also been cancelled for 2010.

At this time of year, judges in the Creative East Awards would normally be sifting through entries to what would have been its fourth annual awards.

But a message on the awards website says: “There will be no Creative East Awards in 2010. The next Creative East Awards will take place in 2011 and will be an innovative, exciting and wide-ranging event. Please watch this website in later 2010 for details.”

Among the prizes on offer were best radio programme, best film/TV location, best web design/innovation and best exclusive which was won in both 2008 and 2009 by investigative reporter Jon Austin, from Basildon-based daily the Echo.

Awards director Richard Cox had not responded to our request for comment at the time of publication.

Pity. They could have given the creative award to the dummies (accountants probably) who brought in the “layout before text” content system that is wrecking journalism standards.
