Former local press sports editor dies aged 65

A former local press sports journalist has died in hospital at the age of 65.

Peter Doughty worked for the St Helens Star in the 1980s and before that had been sports editor of the rival St Helens Reporter.

He also worked for the Rugby Leaguer, a specialist title devoted to the oval ball game which was owned by the Reporter.

He left the regional press in the mid-1990s but freelanced for various other publications as a sub and sports writer.

Peter, who was divorced with two sons, died at Warrington Hospital on 29 March.

His funeral took place at St Helens Crematorium last Friday.
