Journalists use pedal power for neonatal fundraiser

A chief photographer and chief reporter are embarking on a marathon bike ride next weekend through Wales to raise money for a hospital.

Snapper Phil Blagg and reporter Richard Jones, from the Welshpool-based County Times, will leave the island of Anglesey next Friday.

The duo hope to reach Welshpool sometime on Saturday, having taken in the Snowdonia National Park on the 104-mile trip.

They will be joined by nine other cyclists hoping to raise over £1,000 for the Neonatal Unit at the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital in memory of a baby boy who died after just 31 hours.

In April, Welshpool couple Darren and Karen Hyland lost their newborn baby son to a neonatal death at Royal Shrewsbury Hospital.

Darren organised the bike ride which he hopes will collect fund towards new equipment that will cool the body and brain temperature of babies born with a brain injury.

Karen said: “What we went through is one of the worst things that can happen to any parent.

“We have organised this bike ride to give something back to Shrewsbury Hospital and hope the new equipment will go some way to helping others not go through what we did.”
