Record traffic for Sunderland Echo website

The Sunderland Echo website achieved record web traffic in January, latest figures show.

The Echo is being read by 216,000 people, more than doubling last year’s figure for the same month.

It puts part of its success down to making the website accessible to as many users as possible.

Digital editor Lee Hall said: “This year’s big target is to improve interactivity. We’re looking to introduce more ways to get involved with the website by giving users the chance to submit their own content.

“Expect to see more forums for debate and more community sections as we look to bring the people of Sunderland together online.”

Regular updates are enhanced by slideshows to showcase photos which couldn’t go in the paper, videos and podcasts which allow people to hear the views of experts.

The most successful area of the site was sport, with daily hits regularly in the thousands.

Lee put this down to “big transfer scoops, exclusive player interviews” and Premier League video highlights.
