Sports editor completes 1,000-mile cycle ride as he turns 50

Andover Advertiser sports editor Kerry Miller has completed a 930-mile bicycle ride from John O’Groats to Land’s End – raising more than £2,000 for charity.

Kerry, who suffers from osteoarthritis in his knees and used to be both overweight and unfit, wanted to undertake the challenge before turning 50.

It took him and his co-cyclist Alison Spencer 16 days to complete the ride, arriving in Land’s End on his 50th birthday.

Planning for the journey began in December after he had lost more than 6st and thrown himself into training sessions to get fit.

Kerry said: “I met a woman who told me she had cycled the route twice and a light suddenly went on in my head telling me how I could utilise my new found fitness.”

He said the journey was one he will never forget because of its beautiful scenery, as well as the numerous hills and the torrential wind and rain.

He said: “One day the wind really turned against us in Devon and the whole day was uphill.

“Now, I’m not a big fan of hills but when there’s heavy wind trying to slow us down, it’s even more of a struggle.”

He said he preferred cycling in Scotland because of the scenery and because he could actually lift his head to look around him while pedalling.

He said: “You could actually look at the scenery. But when we were in England most of the route was on A roads, so we had to concentrate rather than look at the views.”

All the money raised by Kerry will go to Naomi House Children’s Hospice near Andover.
