Somerset staff push theboat out

Media staff from the Somerset area are preparing to compete in the Wells Moat Boat Race to raise money for local charities.

Four employees of the Mid Somerset Journal will be joining the media race on Bank Holiday Monday which also includes entries from the Clevedon Mercury, Taunton Times and HTV.

Each team will have to construct its own raft from a variety of materials.

Philip Welch of the Journal is looking forward to the event.

He said: “It’s basically just a bit of fun. We’ve borrowed 40 cider kegs and some beer barrels for the teams to build the rafts with.”

“We’ll be raising money for the Children’s Society with the £10 entry fee for the teams plus sponsorship.”

Following the event, the are plans for several stories in the local papers.

Philip said: “There will be big coverage in the paper, especially lots of pictures of the day. The event has been abandoned for several years, but the new bishop in the area has brought it back.”
