Readers vote to keep eternal flame

Readers of the Daily Echo have voted to keep Bournemouth’s eternal flame.

An overwhelming 96 per cent of readers who called the paper’s voteline said the city’s Millennium Candle should not be snuffed out.

The candle’s funding body Churches Together asked the Echo to help find out if the public thought the flame should stay in place beyond its two-year tenure.

And the number of people who voted “yes” was one of the biggest-ever reactions to a Daily Echo poll.

  • In the aftermath of the terrorist attacks on America the candle has become a focal point for those wishing to pay tribute to the victims with flowers and messages.
