Norfolk paper comes to rescue of Potter star

When a star of Harry Potter found himself in danger of missing the the world premiere of the film, the Eastern Daily Press came to the rescue.

Seventeen-year-old Chris Rankin, the film’s snooty Hogwarts prefect Percy Weasley, was due to attend a screening for cast and crew in London.

A chauffeur-driven car had been arranged to pick him up from his home at 1pm, together with his mum, Marilyn, best friend Will Rist, and Will’s mum, Venetia.

However at 12.55pm, the driver called to say he was running late and it was unlikely he would be able to get Chris to the preview for the 3.30pm arrival deadline.

But luckily, the Eastern Daily Press came to their rescue – and there wasn’t a broomstick or magic spell in sight.

Photographer Bill Smith and reporter Geoff Pulham picked the group in their cars and drove them to meet the driver, saving him 50 miles and ensuring Chris was on time for his unmissable date.

After enjoying the star-studded premiere, Chris said: “I am very grateful to the Eastern Daily Press for helping us get there on time.

“I’ve no idea what would have happened if we had been late for the film. I had an absolutely fantastic time which I will never forget.”

As Percy, Chris plays a son of Mrs Weasley, alias Julie Walters.
