Newspaper staff beat radio rivals in Red Nose pub quiz

The print media beat some local broadcasting rivals when the Shropshire Star took on BBC Radio Shropshire in an “on-air” quiz for Comic Relief.

The Star’s team of four romped home to claim their victory after a challenge was issued by the BBC team.

The event was recorded at the Old Swan Pub at Montford Bridge, near Shrewsbury, and was broadcast at the weekend.

The newspaper team recovered well after being behind for the first three rounds – and turned their deficit into a 59 to 36 point trouncing of their radio colleagues.

The Star had sub-editor John Hindmarch, nostalgia expert Toby Neal, assistant news editor Maria Cusine and reporter Andy Rea to thank for their heroics.

Radio Shropshire put forward presenter Chris Ashley, the newsroom’s Lynn Roberts, reporter Tim Cook and website producer Sam Hatton.

Maria, from the Star, said: “It was a fantastic evening and great fun for both teams.

“We enjoyed doing our bit for charity and thank Radio Shropshire for inviting us to take part.

“We thought we were in for a hammering after the first couple of rounds but we soon got into the swing of things and had a great comeback.”
