Simon Gray has been appointed as managing director of Newsquest Digital Media with effect from 8 April 2002.

Formerly deputy MD, he joined Newsquest in 1997 after previously working for United News & Media and Eastern Counties Newspapers.

Simon (right) succeeds Iain Aiken who retires as managing director of Newsquest Digital Media, on April 7.

He joined Newsquest in 1988 when the group acquired Citizen Newspapers in Lancashire, which he part-owned.

Prior to establishing Newsquest Digital Media, Iain served as MD in a number of the company’s regions including Lancashire, Bradford, Kendal and Cheshire.

The Newsquest group, which employs some 9,000 people, is a leading Internet player and also has interests in leaflet distribution, magazine contract printing and magazine publishing.

It is the UK’s second largest regional publisher – part of the American Gannett corporation – and has more than 300 titles, including 15 dailies, a weekly circulation/distribution of 10.6m copies and ten print locations.
