New book marks union's centenary

A book charting the history of the National Union of Journalists has been published to mark its centenary.

JOURNALISTS: 100 years of the NUJ has been written by Tim Gopsill, editor of union magazine Journalist, and Greg Neale, former father of the NUJ chapel at the Times and the founding editor of BBC History magazine.

The book tells of the strife and struggles of journalists over the years and looks at how their position in society has changed.

It also details how until the 1960s there were few women members of the NUJ, yet now they outnumber men.

As well as detailed accounts of strikes, in-fighting, defeat and achievement there are more than 80 pictures.
