Goodbye to Bob

A popular and well-known photo-journalist has died at the age of 62.

Bob Whitaker worked for both the regional press and in broadcasting and will be sadly missed in both fields.

Born in Nottingham he was initially based in Cornwall as part of the RAF police.

On being demobbed he became a coastguard – despite being unable to swim.

When Bob returned to Nottingham he began working for the Nottingham Evening Post before moving to Boston to take up a career as a freelance cameraman.

During this time he worked for Anglia Television, Yorkshire Television and the BBC.

Bob also found time to work as press officer and reporter for Boston Town Football Club, producing the club’s matchday programmes.

On top of this, he helped run his wife’s coffee shop, owned a pub and was head of a taxi business.

But staff at the Lincolnshire Echo will remember him as one of their favourite and conscientious long-serving correspondents who reported on Boston Town FC for many years.

When the opportunity arose, Bob would always take pictures and reports to the newsdesk himself.

His funeral at Boston Crematorium was packed with representatives from television companies, newspapers and sporting personalities.

He is survived by his wife, three sons and one stepdaughter.
