George Guthrie: Ambitions achieved

The Falkirk Herald has been overwhelmed with tributes for its editor, George Guthrie, who has died after a battle against cancer, aged 42.

A journalist since 1977, he rose from trainee to editor by 1993, becoming Herald editor in 1999.

Last year he picked up the Weekly Newspaper of the Year Award in the Royal Bank of Scotland Press Awards on behalf of what he labelled the “team effort” at the Herald.

  • George Guthrie
  • Johnston Press chairman Freddy Johnston led the tributes and said: “George was a remarkable journalist and first-rate editor. His loss will be felt in the newspaper industry far beyond Falkirk.

“He put up a courageous and wonderful fight against an illness which he knew would eventually overwhelm him, but in the face of all this, he never lost his spirit. He was a man, not only of great ability, but of remarkable bravery.”

Stuart McPherson, managing director of Johnston (Falkirk) Ltd, said: “He was a valued colleague and true friend who will be sorely missed. It was a humbling experience to have worked with such a dedicated professional who demonstrated incredible courage in the face of serious illness – always without complaint.

“George was truly a genuine person who found only good in others. His talent, ingenuity and leadership skills were recognised with a number of leading industry awards for The Falkirk Herald.”

And former Herald editor Ken Waddell said: ”When he was my deputy I described him as my right-hand and my left-hand man.

“He was a model son, a model husband and a model father. He had a nature like gold. I’ll miss him so much.”

Douglas Carr, George’s predecessor as Herald editor, added: “For nearly 25 years George was a talented and dedicated colleague and a true friend.

He faced his illness with enormous courage and without complaint. I remember George for his many wonderful qualities, but mostly for his big smile and generous heart.”
