Double delight as trainee reporters win front page leads just hours into the job

Two trainee reporters celebrated splashes in their first 48 hours working at the South Wales Argus.

That all-important front page lead came for Ben Frampton, five minutes into his first day, and for Debbie Green the day after!

Ben quickly turned around a story on a sex attack on a teenage girl which the paper led its first edition on.

  • Debbie, meanwhile, had been part of a reporting team covering a blaze in Newport which destroyed 12 homes.

After making contact with victims at the scene, one of them told her that looters had been in some of the properties.

  • She quickly confirmed the story with police and phoned in the tale – which immediately went on the web and then made the front page of that day’s final edition.

The article was quickly followed up by all other media in the area.

Assistant editor Mark Templeton said: “It was a cracking start for our new trainees who were thrilled to see their bylines on the front.

“And in Ben’s case we think he must have set some sort of new record!”
