Death of former sports editor

A former Aberdeen Evening Express sports editor has died.

Ron Robertson, who retired in 1995, was diagnosed with leukaemia last October and died in hospital. He was 61.

Ron had worked at the Evening Express for 40 years, joining the paper as an office junior when his first job each morning was to fetch the coal and light the fire in the sports department.

He had always wanted to work on the sports desk and got his big chance when a reporter was called up to do National Service and he stepped into their shoes.

As a keen golfer and bowler, he specialised in reporting both sports and was sports editor when he was forced to retire through ill health.

Evening Express assistant editor Ron Ferrier, who worked with Ron for more than 30 years, said: “Ron was an exceptional journalist who won admirers from all over the North-east for his honesty and integrity.”
