Death of former Chronicle photographer

Former Essex Chronicle chief photographer, Geoff Baker, has died aged 68.

Geoff joined the Essex Chronicle in 1956, and was promoted to chief photographer in 1969.

During tea breaks he would entertain colleagues with Tommy Cooper-style card tricks and magic.

He retired from the Chronicle in 1990, but was still a much sought after wedding photographer.

Geoff, who lived in Writtle, is survived by Helen, and has a son Robert and daughter Trina by his first marriage to Betty, and two grand-daughters.

He was a keen sportsman enjoying cricket and squash. He was also a member of Writtle Table Tennis Club and had been playing in a district league contest on the night he died.

A dedicated yachtsman and RNLI supporter, Geoff’s ashes are to be scattered at sea.
