Citizen names murder suspect on TV show

The name of a suspected killer of Gloucestershire man Ian Lowery has been revealed to Crimewatch UK by The Citizen following a reconstruction of his mysterious death.

The paper’s crime reporter Dennis Apperly revealed the name and address of a “prime suspect” after presenter Nick Ross appealed for information.

Dennis said: “This man’s name has been passed to me on a number of occasions and from several sources – I have had a number of phone calls since The Citizen took up the case.”

Ian was killed on July 27, 1996, and the events of that night were reconstructed on Crimewatch by actors who followed Ian’s route home from a club and visited a Chinese takeaway.

He and a friend were then said to have parted company – Ian was never seen alive again and his body was found on a railway line.

Editor Spencer Feeney said: “Five years after the event, mystery still surrounds the death of Ian Lowery.

“But during our investigations into the story, one name has repeatedly cropped up as someone who knows exactly what happened to Ian that night.

“If the police did not have that person’s name before, they do following the Crimewatch television programme highlighting Ian’s death. Now it is down to them to investigate and find out if there is any evidence to justify taking this further.

“For the peace of mind of Ian’s family, this case needs finally to be laid to rest.”
