Post prints 20,000 cards on spiked drink danger

The Bristol Evening Post’s Clubsafe campaign has taken a new twist – as it warns women to be wary of spiked drinks on nights out.

The initiative was originally launched to ensure women got home safely after two local women were murdered walking home along from nightclubs.

Now, to further improve the safety of female clubbers, the Post has printed 20,000 special cards for nightclub staff and revellers to attach to their drinks to raise awareness over the risks of spiking.

The card hangs over the lip of the glass and displays the message “Watch My Drink”. On the reverse is a brief explanation of the problem and what the card aims to do.

Evening Post editor Mike Lowe said: “The key is raising awareness. Any club wanting to do their bit should contact us and we’ll send off some of our ‘Watch My Drink’ cards. Let’s make sure Christmas and New Year are remembered for the right reasons.”

Clubsafe involved night clubs and taxi firms getting together to adopt a series of pledges aimed at making it easier and safer for women to get home after a night out.

They include clubs offering a free phone line for women out on their own to call a taxi, and cab drivers doing their bit to make sure their women passengers get safely to their door.

More than 4,500 personal safety alarms have been sold, and thousands of posters, phonecards and beer mats have been distributed across Bristol and the Post’s circulation area in Gloucestershire and Somerset. The campaign has also won the backing of politicians, celebrities and safety groups.
