Evening Post move prompts flying shoes invention

A project launched by the Bristol Evening Post is set to result in production of ‘flying shoes’, which will take people soaring over the city’s rooftops.

Airbus will carry out the work on the shoes, which give a virtual simulation of the flight.

The Really Useful Invention project, launched by the Post, with backing from Airbus, and @Bristol in partnership with the Bristol Education Action Zone, is designed to develop school pupil’s imaginations and teamwork skills.

It has also received support from the Prime Minister, who said: “This is an excellent example of the private sector playing an important role in helping to raise standards in schools.”

The shoes were designed by pupils at Sefton Park Infant and Junior Schools, Bristol, who voted for the idea in a competition to find something ‘really useful’.

Other ideas included a heated ski suit to prevent hypothermia, and a pair of glasses which use a bat-like echo location system in glasses for the blind.

The budget for the Flying Shoes was around £5,000, and the deadline only eight weeks. The shoes are on top of a plasma screen, projecting an aerial view of Bristol, and act as joysticks, which will move the image as the child moves.
