Emergency plea on blaze damage

An emergency appeal to restore the fire-ravaged Peterborough Cathedral looks set to top the landmark £100,000 figure.

More than 1,000 donations have been banked during the Evening Telegraph appeal and the fund stands at more than £92,000.

The fire caused about £1m of damage to the building and its contents and it is still unclear how much of that will be covered by insurance.

Work is already under way to build scaffolding so that soot can be removed from the painted ceiling. The organ is also undergoing repairs after being damaged by smoke and water in the November blaze.

Police are still trying to trace a man they want to question about the incident, who was seen by people leaving choir practice moments before the fire started.
