Countryside shows set to be saved

A Daily Post campaign to tackle regulations affecting small countryside shows in Wales has won a new victory.

They were being hit by the ‘six-day rule’, a Government ruling introduced in the wake of the foot and mouth disaster which prevented livestock moving between shows held within six days of each other.

Save Our Shows is putting pressure on ministers to solve the problem, which leaves farmers having to choose which events they will attend, forcing many agricultural events to close due to lack of attendance.

Now Defra – the Government’s agricultural department – has finally relented, giving farmers more freedom to take livestock to small county shows.

The move came after representatives from a farmers organisation met with farming minister Lord Whitty.

Questions had already been asked in Parliament about the effects on the economy and on morale.

Caerwys show committee member Paula Spencer said: “This news should make a big difference.”
