The regional BT-sponsored Press and Broadcast Awards were handed out in Birmingham with Adam Blackmore, of BBC Radio Northampton, named as a runner-up in the Society of Editors/Newcomer of the Year category.

He had tried jobs in pub management and lorry driving before deciding to give broadcasting a go.

Having spent a year freelancing with BBC Radio Hereford & Worcester and BBC Radio WM, he picthed up at BBC Radio Northampton in October last year and has quickly established himself as the voice of sport for the region.

The judges said: “His exciting commentaries are a mixture of John Motson and Jonathan Pearce – informed, pacey and thrilling”.
