BT awards for the North West

BT North West Radio News Broadcaster of the Year

Winner: Phillippa Heap, Key 103 FM

What the judges said: “Despite having been in broadcasting for little more than two years, she is already demonstrating an infectious passion for the medium that comes across in everything she does. Whether reporting on the homecoming of Manchester United after their European Cup triumph, interviewing a naked protestor at Manchester Airport or covering the reopening of the city centre after the 96 IRA bomb, she is always a joy to listen to.”

Highly Commended: Steve Becker, BBC Radio Lancashire

What the judges said: “He had another excellent year, originating, researching, writing, producing and presenting several powerful social campaigns. His hour-long documentary on the education of deaf children in Lancashire was a particularly brave project as deafness is, for obvious reasons, a subject rarely tackled on the hearing medium of radio. That he succeeded so well is a tribute to his talent.”

Highly Commended: Sharon Gregory, Rock FM/Magic 999

What the judges said: “Fortunately her management duties as station head of news and sport don’t prevent her from getting out and about and she can still be heard reporting on all the region’s big stories…a good thing for the listeners to Preston’s Rock FM and Magic 999.”
