Journalism lecturer in bid to set up new hyperlocal newspaper

A journalism lecturer has joined forces with a blogger to create a new newspaper and hyperlocal website in Leeds.

John Baron, a journalism and digital media lecturer at Hull School of Art and Design, is working with blogger Emma Bearman to launch the new title, to be called West Leeds Life.

The duo, who both live in West Leeds, want to share news about life in that part of the city and are seeking funds so that John can work part-time on the newspaper and website.

The plans for the new title are still in the early stages but a blog has already been set up, pictured below, and a meeting is being held later this month to attract interest from potential contributors.

The duo are organising an event in Leeds on June 30 to generate interest in the venture which is currently being publicised on the Eventbrite website.

It states that they are looking for “people with a passion for where they live, who have a little time to invest and interest in helping shine a light on community stories, people, news, history, the interesting stuff.

“You may already run a blog in West Leeds, or have an active Twitter account, or are brilliant with a camera, a fiend for finding facts.

“We’re really interested to develop a network of community reporters, story tellers and instigators across West Leeds.”

John has been a journalist for more than 21 years and has worked for a number of regional newspapers, including the Leeds Weekly News and Wakefield Express, and also edited the Guardian Leeds website.

Emma has created a number of hyperlocal blogs around Leeds, including the Armley Tourist Board and The Culture Vulture.
