Readers to get online access to regional daily newsroom

A leading regional newspaper is staging an ‘open day’ this week by inviting readers to visit its newsroom online.

The Manchester Evening News is giving its online audience unprecedented real-time access to its newsroom to see how it covers news across its patch.

By visiting its website, readers will be able to watch live video of the daily editorial conference – and ask editors questions about the decisions they make on the day’s news.

The initiative, dubbed ‘Manchester Live,’ will take place this Wednesday, in the week that it marks the 146th anniversary of its first edition in October 1868.

As well as showing how it brings the news to the smartphone generation, the paper will also take a fond look back at its past with features, quizzes and video.

Editor-in-chief Rob Irvine said: “The Manchester Evening News has the largest online audience of any regional newspaper in the country and we are at the leading edge of digital journalism.

“This has been achieved by transforming the way our journalists operate and the structure of our newsroom.

“Manchester Live will show how we have adapted to the way our readers now consume our news, whether that is in print, on desktop, mobile or tablet.”

As part of the initiative, the MEN will also publish the live ‘news list’ which documents all the leads its journalists are working on, and the stories they are about to break on our website and on social media.

There will also be Q&A sessions with key editorial staff who specialise in areas such as Manchester United and Manchester City, business, showbiz and crime.

Readers will be able to see how the paper is printed, and distributed, across Greater Manchester every day and how advertisers can reach audiences in print and online.

And the MEN will also be showcasing some of the latest technology used to bring the news to life, including drone cameras, wearable tech, hyperlapse video and real time data.

Bet the readers will be fascinated by the sight of reporters spending all day looking at Twitter and Facebook to find a story, staring forlornly at the grimy windows and wondering what happens out there in the real world.
And the joy of seeing how the latest listicles are put together.
    It’ll be such an eye-opener, I’m sure.
