Northern weekly to leave town centre offices

A Northumberland weekly newspaper is set to move to new offices this month.

Staff at the Morpeth Herald will transfer to a site at Telford Court on the outskirts of the town, around a mile and a half from their present Newgate Street base.

The new headquarters, which lie close to Northumberland County Hall, will be the editorial centre for the Johnston Press-owned Herald and its sister titles, the News Post Leader and News Guardian.

It will also the advertising centre for those three titles and the Northumberland Gazette.

A statement on the Herald’s website reads: “We will still be providing unrivalled coverage of news and sport from the Morpeth and Ponteland areas, but from offices that are better suited to the needs of the modern-day media operation.”

The transfer forms part of a rolling company-wide programme of office moves designed to bring working environments up to scratch.

Last November HoldtheFrontPage revealed the regional publisher had created a dedicated website to market current and former newspaper offices it wishes to sell or lease, although it has since been taken down.

The Herald’s exact moving date has not yet been announced.

The hacks (those that are left, anyway) from the News Guardian are already sharing said office way off their patch as their office closed over a year ago.

Lying close to the County Hall which is scheduled for closure. It was not that long ago JP were talking about the importance of having a base on the High Street. Now it seems they want to protect the staff from the community who feel let down by newspapers that no longer properly provide the basics of news reporting.

they have reduced fine county papers, some of them very old, to nothing more than cobbled together rags. what a shame.
