A daily is to continue using its newsroom as a classroom for a second year running.

The News, Portsmouth, has teamed up with Highbury College to offer its journalism students real reporting experience after the success of its initial trial in 2013.

Eight aspiring journalists, pictured below, will be given a patch to cover across The News’ four localised editions and will contribute content to the Johnston Press-owned title’s community pages.

Last year’s scheme was presented with “best community initiative” in this year’s JP awards.

Mark Waldron, editor of The News, said: “This is a truly ground-breaking scheme.

“To get a year’s experience on a busy regional daily newspaper is invaluable for these students.

“It will give them a head start when the time comes to start looking for a job in the industry.”
