City journalism student wins £25,000 prize

A journalism student has won a £25,000 prize awarded in memory of a renowned political writer.

Ashley Cowburn, an MA student at City University, won the 2014 Anthony Howard award for young journalists.

As well as the cash sum, Ashley also wins placements at The Times, The Observer and the New Statesman – the three titles where Anthony Howard held senior roles.

Ashley’s winning entry comprised a 5,000-word essay on how an increase in working-class representation in mainstream political parties could revive interest in politics.
