Reporter who quit on YouTube to star in documentary

A regional press reporter who became a YouTube sensation after drunkenly resigning from a regional daily will star in a documentary about his life.

Adam Smith, who is also known as Steve Zacharanda, became an unlikely YouTube hit after he resigned from the Birmingham Mail while celebrating Barack Obama’s victory in the 2008 US election.

A 27-minute documentary has now been made about Adam’s life called Obama and Me: The Steve Zacharanda Story, which will premiere at Birmingham’s Electric Cinema on 6 March.

The film was made by production company Jolly Demon which shadowed him for four months as he prepared to return to America for the 2012 election and as he toured the Midlands promoting his book, Obama and Me: The Incredible True Story of a YouTube Sensation.

Adam, who now works for the Halesowen News, said: “I’ve heard that President Obama heard a segment of the YouTube clip on Washington Radio which is amazing to think of. To be mentioned in the same breath as Obama is one of the highlights of my life.

“I can’t wait to see it, and if I come across as a complete idiot, then well, that might be because I am one in some ways, but then again who isn’t?”
