Press photographer on end of expensive tackle

Being ‘knocked for six’ is usually a phrase associated with cricket but that’s how one press photographer must have felt after an unfortunate collision with Coventry City striker Callum Wilson on Sunday afternoon.

Coventry Telegraph’s Joe Bailey was covering City’s League One match with Gillingham when the Sky Blues star accidentally crashed into him as he chased a down a pass.

Although the in-form centre forward prevented the ball going out for a goal kick, he coudn’t apply the brakes quick enough and left Joe flat on his back –  and with a broken to camera lens to boot!

The collision between Joe and Callum was caught on a fan's camera

Joe, who suffered no injuries, was quickly up on his feet and his hopeful his camera lens worth thousands of pounds can be repaired in the coming weeks.

“It was one of those situations where you know it’s going to happen, the player is bearing down on you but I didn’t know what he was going to hit first,” he said.

“He tried to help me up afterwards but I wasn’t ready to get up, I was lying traumatised wondering what had happened to the lens.”

Joe says only his pride and not his body has been damaged but is hopeful the Coventry City players will club together and pay for his new lens.

“I had a word with their press officer afterwards, I’m sure the money they are on they can afford it but I’ve not heard back yet,” he added.

Surely the Telegraph will pay for any repairs if he’s a staff tog and it’s their lens? CCFC’s finances are on a par with the Greek economy I’ve heard so I doubt they’ll be chipping in…
