Jobs at risk under plans to close Trinity Mirror print plant

Trinity Mirror is set to close one of its regional printing plants putting 28 people at risk of redundancy, it has been revealed.

The company is planning to close its print works in Reading, which produces the Reading Post and other newspaper titles, and transfer printing to another of its sites in Watford, 44 miles away.

The Tessa Road site in Reading is also home to the Post and Trinity Mirror is not renewing the lease when it expires early next year, so staff working for the title will have to move to a new office base.

A consultation with affected staff has now been started and some alternative roles at the Watford print works are being offered to those at risk of redundancy.

A Trinity Mirror spokesman said: “Trinity Mirror Printing Reading has announced that it will not be renewing the lease on its Tessa Road site in Reading when it expires in early 2014. We have entered into a period of consultation with all affected staff.”

The Reading Post is set to be printed in Watford for the first time this week and other titles printed in Reading are set to be transferred to other sites around the group.

The company is now looking into alternative locations for a new base for the Post, once the lease on the site runs out.

The Reading Post made the switch from a daily title to two weekly editions in 2009 – a paid-for Wednesday edition and a free Friday title called Get Reading.

Trinity Mirror Printing will still have nine printing sites around the UK, to publish the group’s own titles and for contract printing.
