Reporters spent night on streets for sponsored sleep out

Reporters from a weekly newspaper in Kent braved the cold to spend the night in a cardboard box in order to raise funds for two charities.

Medway Mesenger reporters Jenni Horn, Dan Bloom and Alan Mcguinness slept outdoors on Saturday night for Medway based homeless charity Emmaus, and the Alzheimers charities

Around 92 people took part in the event held in the car park of housing association Mhs Homes which organised the event to coincide with National Homelessness Day.

Jenni, a senior reporter at the Medway Messenger, has taken part in the event twice before.

She said: “It was quite cold, it wasn’t too bad but did drop to freezing. We all had lots of layers on and comforts that homeless people don’t have like sleeping bags and Dan had straw.”

“I managed to grab about two hours sleep as people stayed up until three and were awake again at five.”

The event was launched by chairman of Emmaus UK John Noble along with Jay Aston from 80s band Bucks Fizz who is a patron of the Alzheimer’s Society because her dad suffered from it.

John also took part in the event at the age of 79 and was in the box next to the reporters.

The event is held every two years and all three said they would take part next time.

They raised £500 in sponsorship between the three of them and a total of £11k was raised altogether with one man raising £1,500.

Emmaus is a charity which gives people a roof over their heads and a means of earning a living.

Other people taking part included MPs and councillors.

In 2010, 150 sleepers raised £24,000 on a night when temperatures dropped to -6C.
