ABC figures: How the regional dailies performed

The Norwich Evening News topped the UK regional newspaper circulation league table for the third time in succession today by posting a 7.5pc increase, although only 80pc of its copies were direct sales.

Excluding bulks, the Western Morning News, which sells 99.6 of its copies, appears to be the best performing daily title in sales terms with a 1pc decline.

Most of the titles listed below are classified by the ABC as at least 95pc paid-for.  The exceptions are the Manchester Evening News (67.1pc), Belfast Telegraph (79.5pc), Ipswich Star (80pc), Norwich Evening News (81.3pc), Liverpool Daily Post (81.4pc),  East Anglian Daily Times (89.2pc), Eastern Daily Press (89.5pc), Cambridge News (89.8pc)  and Coventry Telegraph (94pc).

The Lincolnshire Echo, Torquay Herald Express, Exeter Express & Echo and Scunthorpe Telegraph are still included in this list as they were daily titles for part of the period under review.  They have since moved to weekly publication and are also included in the weeklies’ list.   The LDP has also now gone weekly but was a daily for the whole of the period under review.

Here is the full list of UK regional dailies, ranked in order of the average percentage increase or decrease between the period Jul-Dec 2010 and Jul-Dec 2011.

Treat the figures cautiously. I’m reliably informed that one of the papers listed above is selling about 5,000 less than stated
