Newsagents lament loss of Kent weeklies

Newsagents in Kent have expressed disappointment at the decision to close two weekly titles in the wake of a failed merger bid.

Regional publisher Northcliffe Media is axing the Medway News and East Kent Gazette after its bid to sell the titles to local rival the KM Group was blocked.

The final edition of the News was published yesterday while the Gazette will hit the streets for the last time today.

The National Federation of Retail Newsagents Kent district president Christine Southern said: “Like local newsagents local newspapers are an important part of the community so we are saddened to see the two Kent newspapers disappear.”
