Record entry for regional media awards

Judging is taking place today for the EDF Energy London and South East Media Awards following a record 347 entries.

The awards, run in association with HoldtheFrontPage, cover Dorset, Hampshire, Kent, London, Surrey and East and West Sussex and have this year proved more popular than ever with newspaper and broadcasting journalists in the region.

The shortlist for the awards will be published on this website next week, with the ceremony taking place in Sussex in October.

As usual, our seven-strong judging panel contains some impressive names with decades of journalistic experience between them. They are:

  • Keith Perch, editor of the Leicester Mercury and a former editor of both the South Wales Echo and Derby Evening Telegraph.

  • Steve Dyson, former editor of the Birmingham Mail and Middlesbrough Evening Gazette, now a freelance journalist and HTFP blogger.

  • Gary Phelps, editor of the Tamworth Herald and group editor of Northcliffe’s Central Independent Newspapers division.

  • Paul Delmar, who recently retired as leader of the press photography and photojournalism course at Sheffield College.

  • Karen Ainley, a former regional TV reporter and presenter and now a Chartered Institute of Public Relations-approved media trainer.

  • Keith Beech, station manager and programme controller of West Midlands radio station BBC WM.

  • Claire Byrd, head of regional media relations for award sponsors EDF Energy and former assistant editor of The Argus, Brighton.
