Regional newspaper editor retires from post

Coventry Telegraph editor Alan Kirby is taking early retirement.

Alan will leave the post at Christmas as part of shake-up of senior editorial staff at Trinity Mirror Midlands’ titles.

Current Sunday Mercury editor Dave Brookes will be the Telegraph’s new editor from January.

Birmingham Mail editor Steve Dyson will remain in charge of the daily title but will take on the additional responsibility of the Sunday Mercury.

Marc Reeves will remain as editor of the Birmingham Post but will also be charged with online development for the region.

Tony Lennox, editorial director of Midlands Weekly Media, is taking on the new role of business development editor.

As well as continuing to oversee the development of the company’s weekly titles, Tony will be exploring new publishing opportunities in the Midlands.

A Trinity Mirror statement said: “Alan has been a brilliant and committed editor for the Coventry Telegraph and will be devoting his remaining time with the company to ensuring that the title is best positioned for the future.”

The senior editorial shake-up is part of wider changes at Trinity Mirror.

The plans include the introduction of a single, integrated newsroom for Birmingham, a centralised production unit serving titles across the Midlands and a streamlining of production processes and widespread multi-skilling of staff.

  • In a separate development, the Birmingham Post will be relaunched in the autumn. It will lose its Saturday edition, switch from broadsheet to tabloid and become more business led. It will have a companion mobile phone website while www.birminghampost.net will also undergo further development.

Top man in charge of a top newspaper. You’ll be missed, Alan – man of sound judgement and terrific humour. They don’t make them like you any more.
