Weekly News celebrates

The Wellington Weekly News is celebrating its first birthday after being relaunched in May 2000.

The Somerset paper has enjoyed a momentous year since management of the title was taken over by Taunton Newspapers.

The achievements peaked with the BT South West Media awards when the WWN was one of two runners-up in the Weekly Newspaper of the Year category.

It was a remarkable achievement for a small local paper with a pagination averaging 32 and a team of just two reporters.

The WWN serves a tight-knit rural area and is held is high regard locally.

Local personalities paid tribute to its work in the anniversary issue.

Mayor Mary Whitmarsh said: “The reporters present the truth without interpretation.”

Headmaster of independent Wellington School Alan Rogers said: “The Wellington Weekly’s new image has warmed my heart, for here real newspaper reporting and investigation is up front.

“It is a balanced newspaper, allowing freedom of expression and objectivity in its conclusions. Please continue to maintain the very high standards of your inaugural year as the voice of our town.”
