Post is quick off the mark for breaking news

The Nottingham Evening Post printed 2,000 A3 flyers on Saturday to bring city centre readers the very latest breaking news.

They contained an updated splash after police revealed that one of the ‘bin bag murder’ victims found in London was originally from Nottingham.

The newspaper is printed in Derby and its Saturday press run had ended – so the flyers were printed up at the Evening Post office in Nottingham and sent out to the city centre and surrounding outlets.

The Metropolitan Police released the identity of the woman and shortly afterwards e-mailed a photograph. Reporters were already out getting background information on the victim to add to the new story.

Assistant editor Duncan Hamilton said: “It was the last Saturday before the schools went back so the city centre was still very busy and we thought it was an opportunity not to be missed.”

The flyer included all the facts the paper knew about the girl and her picture and the story was updated again in the Football Post which is published late on Saturday afternoon.

Duncan said: “We also immediately sent out reporters to areas where we felt we could find out added information about the girl, such as which school she went to, if she had had a part-time job, and if she still has relatives in the area.”

The Post reported that police were with the parents of city-born Liz Valad in the Nottingham suburb of Arnold and that they had to supply DNA samples to confirm her identity.

The paper has printed flyers before when news has broken late – and received positive feedback from readers.
