Plain English award for Westcountry newspaper

The Western Morning News will be celebrating today as it picks up a national award for crystal-clear reporting.

The Plymouth-based newspaper is one of seven winners at the 28th annual Plain English Campaign awards.

Journalists from national newspapers, television and radio will also pick up media awards at the event in London.

The Western Morning News was named Best Regional Newspaper.

The judges said: “This paper concentrates on rural issues that affect the population of the South West, and is renowned for its campaigning and support of local charities and pressure groups.

“Well-designed and laid out, it reports in language which is easy to understand.

“The paper’s website is also a good source of local news, jobs and property.”

Previous local newspaper winners include the Newcastle Evening Chronicle, Edinburgh Evening News, Yorkshire Post and Western Daily Press.

The judges take into account nominations and comments from Campaign supporters. They also read, watch and listen to examples of work.

The Plain English Campaign officially began in 1979, after founder Chrissie Maher OBE publicly shredded hundreds of official documents in Parliament Square, London. It has more than 11,000 members in 80 countries.

The independent organisation funds itself through its commercial services, which include editing and training.
