Ocean liner's visit brings extra readers

The arrival of the world’s biggest ocean liner in her home port of Southampton is proving a big “hit” for Newsquest Southern’s digital media team.

Boxing Day saw the arrival of the new Cunard liner, QM2, in the city.

Website This is Southampton had been following the building of the ship since the keel was laid in 2002 with a special QM2 section on its Shipping web pages.

But prior to Christmas, content editor Phil Burner created a new site using in-house developed software, Digital Publisher.

The new site, qm2southampton.co.uk, was built to provide a platform for the editorial coverage and also promote the sale of two special QM2 publications.

The Daily Echo is printing a special in-paper supplement as well as a 132-page, limited edition, glossy magazine.

Both products were placed on the Daily Echo Shoppers World site with links from the QM2 pages.

The site attracted more than 10,000 page impressions in the first six days of 2004, plus 22,700 in December. And since its launch date the site has generated around 300 orders amounting to around £3,400.
