News delivered to the palm of your hand

The Herald, Glasgow, has become the first Scottish newspaper to deliver up-to-date news to readers around the world using handheld devices.

Using Personal Digital Assistants, readers will be able to access the latest available digital version of the paper wherever there are in the world.

The service will run in tandem with the existing online edition of the paper and is expected to be popular with expatriate readers.

The devices are already owned by an estimated 5m people in Europe and this figure is expected to rise by 130 per cent in the next four years.

Kevin Salaman, sales manager for Roundpoint, the company behind the technology, said: “We expect there to be a lot of interest from overseas as well as from south of the border, where many Scots can’t get hold of The Herald.”

Subscription to the service costs £5 per month or £50 per year.
