A series of key editorial and training appointments – including a new editor for a Sunday regional – has been announced by Trinity Mirror.

Tim, who has been with WoS for three years, is stepping up from deputy editor as current editor Alan Edmunds takes up his new post as editor of The Western Mail.

Brian Aitken, (left), currently assistant sports editor at the Scottish Daily Record, is joining the Trinity Mirror Regionals divisional team, based in Liverpool, as editorial development manager.

He will report to editorial director Neil Benson and his brief is work with editors on major product development initiatives throughout the regionals division and to play a leading role in spreading best practice.

Before joining the Record, Aitken edited the Lincolnshire Echo and was previously deputy editor and acting editor of the Aberdeen Evening Express.

Neil said: “Brian has a very strong background in production journalism and in leading cross-functional teams.

“Several of our top titles have big development plans for the next year, and Brian’s experience will be of enormous help to them.”

TMR’s head of editorial staff development Tony Johnston has been given an expanded role, to take account of the growing demand for training and development of journalists within the division.

Tony, (right), who is based at TMR’s editorial training centre in Newcastle, will be responsible for introducing new career development opportunities and will investigate new methods of increasing staff retention.

Neil Benson said: “Over recent years, our investment in editorial training – from new trainees to senior staff – has grown dramatically.

“As well as continuing to deliver excellent core skills training, Tony will be leading some ground-breaking initiatives aimed at enhancing the terrific pool of talent within Trinity Mirror Regionals.”
