John McGurk, the editor of Scotland on Sunday, has been appointed editorial director of The Scotsman Publications.

He will take up his new position in January and his replacement will be named in the new year.

Mr McGurk, 47, was appointed editor of SoS in 1997.

Under his stewardship, the title was named UK Sunday Newspaper of the Year in 1998 and 2000.

His previous positions include editor of the Evening News and deputy editor of the Daily Record.

He said: “I am delighted to take on a more challenging and responsible role involved in all our newspapers and at such an exciting time in their development.”
