Mercury celebrates the Festival of Light

A 16-page special has been produced by the Leicester Mercury to celebrate the Diwali festival of light.

News and views about the Asian celebration, which culminated last night in fireworks and candle celebrations for Diwali Day, were carried in the free supplement.

Leicester plays host to the biggest celebration of the festival outside the Indian sub-continent as more than 25,000 revellers descend onto the city streets, some of which are closed for the occasion.

The suppplement looks at the event itself, people’s celebrations and its significance on everyday life.

There are also Diwali recipes, memories and fashion notes.

  • Diwali celebrations include prayers for world peace and prosperity but it has different meanings depending on which part of India people originate from:
For Hindus it also marks the beginning of the financial new year; for Sikhs it is the time to remember the release of Guru Hargobind from the Gwanlilor Fort and Bengalis use the festival as a time to worship Kali, the goddess who destroys all evils on earth.
