Handbags and gladrags? No – fishnets and medallions!

Visitors to the Southern Daily Echo in Southampton could have been forgiven for thinking they had stepped on to the set of Chicago.

Heartbeats were raised as the paper’s female staff slipped into fishnets to raise money for a Southampton-based cardiac charity.

Their male colleagues were not left out – they became medallion men for the day.

Everyone who took part was asked for a minimum donation of £1.

The event raised more than £400 for Wessex Heartbeat, which supports the cardiac unit at Southampton General Hospital.

Wessex Heartbeat chief executive Alan Blair said: “Our friendship with the Daily Echo goes back to the very beginning of the charity.

“We are just delighted that in this, the start of our tenth anniversary year, the paper is continuing to support us in such an innovative way.”
