Express & Echo wins a fare deal

Transport company Stagecoach has changed its policy over fares for children under five following publicity in Exeter’s Express & Echo.

The newspaper revealed how Exeter mum Janette Davey was left at a bus stop when she did not have enough money to pay a fare for one of her children aged four, two and five weeks.

She thought all under-fives travelled free. In fact, Stagecoach only allowed a maximum of two children aged under-five to travel free of charge with one fare-paying adult, but that has now been increased to three.

A delighted Mrs Davey said the change in policy will save her more than £120 a year, and mean big savings for other families.

Derek Fishpool, operations director for Stagecoach, told the Express & Echo: “Mrs Davey identified a particular need. We’re always reviewing our pricing policy and services.

“We’ve had a look at the regulations in more detail and taken the commercial decision to increase the maximum to three children under five.”
