Career swap for journalist Joanna

Ever fancied giving up your day job and trying out an entirely new career?

Bristol Evening Post journalist Joanna Quinn is doing just that – if only occasionally – for a new series of features which will see her try out a different job each week.

The 28-year-old news feature writer is used to the hustle and bustle of the newsroom, but her latest assignment will take her away from that comfort zone to become a lollipop lady, DJ, beautician and ambulance crew member.

Her wish list also includes spending a day as an MP, dustbinman, zoo keeper – and a circus performer – and she has already tried her hand at hairdressing and working as a hotel receptionist (pictured).

Joanna said: “The hairdressers was really hard work. You don’t get to sit down all day and your hands get tired from all the hair washing.

“It did make me appreciate hairdressers more and was interesting to do.

“Being a hotel receptionist also gave me an insight – you have a hundred and one different things to do and you still have to look calm.”

Before launching the weekly series Joanna drew up a list of interesting jobs and began contacting businesses, and now she is also getting invites from people who have read her features.

Joanna said: “We’re going to be looking at unusual jobs that you wouldn’t normally get to try out and also underrated jobs that people often take for granted.

“Hopefully it will be interesting for me and the readers.”
