Taxi to Kathmandu

A couple are rediscovering the hippy trail by taking a taxi to Kathmandu – to raise cash for a newspaper cancer appeal.

Readers of the Norwich Evening News can keep up to date with the trek on the newspaper website as the couple travel from Yarmouth and through Europe and Asia to reach their goal.

Martin Roche and Helen Swanston are filing regular copy from their travels – and they’re currently roving through Turkey.

The journey is to raise money for the Big C Cancer Appeal, which is aiming to raise £250,000 during this year, its 20th anniversary year.

Martin has supported the appeal since his wife June died of breast cancer in 1998.

The couple are travelling in a 1987 maroon taxi with 1,000,000 miles on the clock.

The pair chose Nepal because, according to Helen: “It’s as far as you can go before hitting China, where they don’t seem too keen on independent travellers.

“It’s also the ultimate well-worn hippy trail, ” she said, “and I’m sure we’ll meet some incredible people on the way.”
