'No reply' leads to campaign

Busy Tony Blair has yet to reply to an open letter from the North Devon Journal pleading for more help in the region to cope with the foot and mouth crisis.

The letter from the newspaper was written on behalf of the North Devon community with a plea for the PM to give urgent attention to “unique problems” being faced in the area.

North Devon relies on agriculture and tourism as its two main industries and both are being affected by foot and mouth disease.

The newspaper still hasn’t received a reply to the letter from Mr Blair’s office, or even an acknowledgement, and feels officials are not doing enough to help the region.

The Journal has now started its own campaign, the North Devon Crisis Aid Appeal.

The newspaper has kicked the campaign off by donating £250. Cash collected will go towards helping organisations providing support for those hit hardest by the crisis.

The North Devon District Council has also made an associated pledge of £20,000 to some of the agencies being targeted by the campaign.

Readers of the newspaper are being urged to make donations to support the community through the crisis and help.
