Four-page special in support of Boots workers

The Airdrie & Coatbridge Advertiser is fighting to save the jobs of more than 1,000 workers at a cosmetics factory earmarked for closure.

The plans, by retailer Boots, are a major blow to the area, where the factory is one of the biggest employers.

Editor John Murdoch has spoken out in support of the workforce, and this week the Advertiser produced a four-page special to give its backing to their plight.

Politicians and union officials plan to address an open-air rally outside the Boots shop in the town centre on Saturday, April 12.

The Advertiser has produced hundreds of colour posters, petition forms and car stickers for the event.

John said: “We are totally behind the workforce. Their hard work and loyalty has been rewarded with contempt.

“This community must battle to save the Boots jobs because it is not only the workers at the plant that will suffer.

“The loss of this plant will have a knock-on effect and cost the area millions upon millions of pounds as well as misery to the families involved.”

Research from the local council showed the total cost could end up being as many as 2,000 jobs and £122m.
